Cristóbal de Villalpando
Los Cinco Señores (Holy Family with Saints Anne and Joachim)

Circa 1705-1714
Oil on canvas
Museo Soumaya at Plaza Carso, Mexico City

Villalpando is among the most prominent painters in viceregal New Spain, but this iconographic type can be found in numerous items of folk art as well. In this type Mary holds the child Jesus on her lap, attended by St. Anne, Mary's mother. Behind them stand St. Joseph and Mary's father, St. Joachim. The Father and the Holy Spirit will be in the clouds above them.

For a discussion of this and several related iconographic types, see Zarur and Lovell, 79-87.
